Year 6 Maya Masks

16th November 2021

"Today, Year 6 had a wonderful time finding out all about the masks that the Ancient Maya Civilisation used. We discovered that the Maya had masks for a variety of reasons including: death masks, battle masks and ceremonial masks. We researched Maya masks and recorded our findings in our sketchbooks, picking out examples of masks we particularly liked. We then developed our knowledge of techniques for using clay and experimented with these. We learnt how to use scratch, slip, stick and smooth to attach two pieces of clay together. Next, we designed our own Maya masks, using the research from the morning to give us inspiration. Finally, we used clay to create our own Maya masks. They are all so beautiful and creative- well done Year 6! Once they are dry, we are hoping to paint and varnish them."
