'Be More Tree' project - Spring 2024

'Be More Tree' is a project our Year 4 classes worked on with Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination in the Spring Term 2024.

There were several stages to the project:
  • firstly, a visit of a group of children to King's College Fellows' Garden
  • secondly, a workshop day in school, where lots of time was spent outside on our school field and loads of fantastic artwork was created!
  • finally, the artists created 4 banners using the children's artwork.
The banners will form part of CCI's ongoing project, 'Fantastical Forest'.  They have also given us a set of the banners to display and keep in school.

This project was a wonderful way to learn about science, the natural world and how to express ourselves creatively.

We are very grateful to CCI and all of the adults who shared their expertise with us, inspiring some wonderful art and experiences of being creative outdoors!  Thank you!
Visit to King's College - Wednesday 28th February, 2024

A group of 6 children from Year 4 visited King's College to do some work in the Fellows' Garden.  They worked with artists Sally and Caroline, scientist Jen and one of the King's College gardeners, Tim for the morning.  They did some sketching and also collected root samples from some of the plants grown in the garden.  Jen took the samples back to her lab after the session and produced some amazing images showing the good fungi (mycorrhizal fungi) which form an underground network to help plants to grow.

Below are some great photos from the visit!
Workshop day in school on Wednesday 6th March, 2024

On Wednesday 6th March, we had a lovely day in school, working outside on the school field and indoors too - Jen, the scientist, came to show us images she had made back in her lab of the fungi collected the previous week in the King's College Fellows' Garden.

Then, outside, we spent time looking at the oldest tree on our school field, noticing the features of the tree.  We then looked closely at one of our very tall trees to focus on the branches stretching up and away from the tree trunk.  We were able to spend time sketching a tree, using sketching pencils and also using pastels if we wanted to.

It was lovely to have Sally and Caroline, our artists, as well as Jen and Tim (one of the gardeners from King's College) with us all day, talking to us whilst we were drawing outside, and then indoors, inviting us to respond in our artwork to the images of the fungi making connections underground, helping plants to grow.  We created some fantastic pieces of work!

Children's artwork created out on the school field, inspired by our lovely trees!  We enjoyed being creative with the colours we used...
Class 9 working hard out on the field!
Enjoy looking at the children's work!
