Butterflies in Reception classes

4th July 2018

Class 1 and 2 have had a very exciting time watching their caterpillars change into butterflies. The caterpillars arrived in clear plastic cups with all of the nutritious food they needed. The children placed the cups in safe places away from direct sunlight. The caterpillars remained in the cups and ate, spun silk and grew to TEN times their original size! After ten days they began to hang upside down and harden into chrysalides (chrysalides are also known as pupae). Once the chrysalides had hardened, they were gently moved to the pop-up butterfly habitat. It took about ten days for them to complete the transformation to adult butterflies.

Today the butterflies have all emerged and are feeding, getting ready to be released onto our school field.
