Black History Month - Shawanda Corbett

6th October 2023
In our assembly on Friday 6th October, we had the chance to learn about Shawanda Corbett.  Shawanda is an artist who mostly works in ceramics.  She was born in the USA in 1989, but is now living in the UK and studying art at Oxford University.

Shawanda was born without legs and with one arm.  She has developed ways to be able to make her artwork, particularly devising a novel way of throwing clay, upside down.

We were looking especially at Shawanda's pair of ceramics which form one 'portrait' entitled 'Candy Lady'.  It represents a lady she remembers from her childhood who sold sweets in her area.  The two ceramics each represent the outside and the inside of a person.  They can be seen in the Fitzwilliam Museum - a lovely local connection for us!
