Wear Red Day in support of Show Racism the Red Card - 3.11.23

3rd November 2023
For quite a few years now, we have held a Wear Red Day in school, in support of 'Show Racism the Red Card'.  This is a charity which has been going for over 25 years, and it was started by Shaka Hislop, who was a goalkeeper at Newcastle United.  He had been targeted by a group of young people, who were shouting racist abuse at him until they realised who he was.  They then asked for his autograph... and this experience made Shaka think about how the young people's behaviour changed, not because they knew that what they were doing was wrong, but because Shaka was a well-known professional footballer.  With a group of friends, Shaka started up a charity, wanting to make a difference and to stop racist behaviour towards anyone, famous or not.

On Friday 3rd November, lots of children and staff wore something red to school.  In our assembly, we each had a red card which we waved to show that in our school, we do not tolerate racist language or behaviour.  The photos show a very energetic assembly time as we said together 'At Arbury Primary School, we say NO to racism and YES to kindness'.
One of our children came to school in a very special t-shirt, which was a great reminder of the important message of Wear Red Day.

Here are some colourful t-shirt designs and messages which children in Class 3, 4, 5 and 9 did on Friday!
