Read for Empathy Day 2023

8th June 2023
Today in school we celebrated Read for Empathy Day. The day started with a whole school assembly where the wonderful picture book 'Yes You Can. Cow!' was shared and discussed. The children thought about what empathy is and how reading books helps us to develop empathy.
In class, children took part in various activities. Some classes enjoyed a live online empathy 'draw along' with the author/illustrator Rob Biddulph. Other classes shared book recommendations that they felt really made them feel empathy for the characters.
In Year 6, the wonderful picture book 'Zoo' by Anthony Browne, was read to the children. They focussed on the image of a sad orangutan in a cage and rewrote the page so that the main characters showed more empathy.
Children also were invited to create some empathy bunting at lunchtime where they could draw and write about what empathy is or write their own empathy resolution.
