Arbury Carnival workshop with Kettle's Yard

24th May 2023
We had a lot of fun with Hilary and Karen from Kettle's Yard on Wednesday 24th May, making some items inspired by the carnival theme of 'Mythical Creatures'.

Hilary had been inspired by the Cambridge City Coat-of-Arms, which features two hippocampi - a mythical creature which is half horse and half fish, also known as 'Neptune's horses'.

Using a range of materials, children made tridents, horse and fish headpieces, tails and crowns.  They were helped by their parents and carers too!

Thank you to everyone who came along, and also to Hilary and Karen for bringing inspiration, creative support and lots of wonderful materials!
Above is the coat of arms.  Either side of the Coat of Arms  are special mythical horses belonging to Neptune, called “Hippocampi”. These seahorses are symbols of the sea emphasizing the importance of Cambridge’s access to London and the World via the river route to the Wash and sea beyond!
Have a look below at the wonderful pieces which were made!
